Gallstones are minute or large, oval or round calculi that develop in the gall bladder. Gall stones are formed when there occurs a disproportion in the bile components (i.e. bile salts, cholesterol, bilirubin, fatty acids and phospholipids).

The cause of gall stones is multifactorial; several factors are known to contribute to its development. 

  • The most significant causative factor for the development of gall stones is consuming a diet that supplies very little fiber.
  • A diet that includes undue mounts of refined carbohydrates, denatured foods and fats is a noteworthy cause as well.
  • Gall stones are associated with obesity.
  • Chronic constipation and inadequate consumption of fluids and water have also been regarded as important triggering factors.
  • Clinical trials suggest that women are more prone to the development of gall calculi than men.

Symptoms of Gall Stones

Usually gall stones are asymptomatic, i.e. they do not produce any signs or symptoms. Sometimes, they block the bile duct or inflame the gall bladder and trigger pain. 

  • Intermittent, spasmodic pains on the right side of the upper abdomen. Is the commonest manifesting symptom. Characteristically, the pain starts after a meal. It may last from half an hour to 4 hours. Occasionally, the pain radiates to the chest, shoulder or back.
  • Nausea and vomiting may be accompanying features.
  • Excessive flatulence and abdominal distention are common too.
  • Occassionally gall stones may be associated with symptoms of hepatitis, which include jaundice and fever.

Diet and Food Prescriptions for Gall Stone Treatment: Effective Treatment for Gall Stones

Here are some simple diet and food prescription to manage gall stones effectively 

  • Fiber: increase your consumption of dietary fiber; it will prevent a worsening of the complaint. Consume oat bran, psyllium seeds and flax seeds in large quantities. They are very good sources of dietary fiber. Furthermore, make fresh fruits and vegetables the stronghold of your diet.
  • Restrict intake of fatty foods: check your intake of fats and refined carbohydrates.
  • Increase water intake: step up your intake of water, have 12 to 15 glasses per day.
  • Vitamin C: vitamin C reduces bile cholesterol levels and decreases the chance that cholesterol-laden bile will aggregate to form stones. Incorporate loads of limes in the daily diet. Another option is having a vitamin C supplement – 1000 mg, thrice a day for about 15 days.
  • Peppermint oil: peppermint oil supplements are known to dissolve gall stones efficiently. They also boost digestion and reduce the feeling of bloatedness and gassy stomach. Furthermore, peppermint essential oil, mixed with a carrier oil, such as, almond or avocado, and massaged over the abdomen gently is decidedly beneficial. Peppermint essential oil relives tightness of the abdomen, allays abdominal pain and discomfort and helps eliminate wind. 

In acute cases, surgery becomes indispensable for gall stone removal; therefore, ensure that your diet is corrected immediately. Maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly.
