Health Tips to Prevent Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are not caused by sitting too much, or by being overweight. Nor are they caused by spicy foods, smoking or stress. Yet these factors are often blamed for causing hemorrhoids. The truth is that most often, those annoying, sometimes painful, swellings of anal tissue can be traced to a diet that is short of fiber and fluid. The key to preventing hemorrhoids is to stop the swelling before it starts.

If you do not consume enough fiber, your stool tends to be small and hard; and your colon cannot get a grip on it and move it along the path of elimination.  Consequently, you will have to strain during bowel movements.  So straining connected to constipation is thought to be one of the most common causes of hemorrhoids.  Because prolonged straining while attempting to defecate may possibly create pressure in blood vessels and predispose a person to swollen hemorrhoids.

The best way to prevent hemorrhoids is to add fiber to your diet.  If you eat sufficient amounts of fiber, you will ensure that you have large, soft, easy to pass stool, that will decrease straining during bowel movements and decrease the chances of getting inflamed hemorrhoids.

As follows are some stool-moving fiber-rich foods:

  1. Cereal:  choose the right breakfast cereal for daily insurance against hemorrhoids.  Brands like All-Bran and Fiber One are rich with dietary fiber.
  2. Fruits: Fresh fruits such as apples, apricots, oranges, pears and berries are good sources of fiber.  Consume apples and apricots with the skin to maximize the fiber factor.  The type of fiber found in melons is soluble fiber, which is especially good for preventing hemorrhoids.  Soluble fiber absorbs water as it moves through your system.  The water makes your stool heavier and bulkier, helping to move the stool through your colon fast and without strain.
  3. Raisins: These dried-up grapes are convenient fiber servings.  Substitute them for other between-meals snacks.
  4. Vegetables:  Fresh vegetables like broccoli, corn, artichokes, green peas and sweet potatoes are loaded with fiber.
  5. Beans:  Eat kidney beans, chickpeas, lima beans and black beans to bulk up your stool and avoid straining that leads to hemorrhoids.
  6. Grains:  Oat bran is a good fiber source, and wheat bran is even better.  Make sure that you get foods containing wheat germ and whole wheat.  If the wheat has been processed--as in white bread, for example--you get far less fiber.  When you check for labels on bread, look for the words “whole wheat” or “whole-wheat flour” at the top of the ingredient list.  Other grains that are rich fiber sources include bulgur and barley.

 In addition to a fiber-rich diet, you need to:

  1. Drink plenty of water:  Fiber builds heavier, softer stools by absorbing water into the intestinal tract.  By drinking plenty of water, you speed up the digestive process and avoid swollen hemorrhoids.
  2. Slash the fat:  You should cut down on saturated fat, which can cause harder stool.  That means eating less red meat; fewer processed baked goods; and fewer high-fat dairy products.
  3. Stroll along:  Thirty minutes or so of aerobic exercise two to three times a week can help prevent constipation, thereby, also prevent swollen hemorrhoids.  Go for a brisk walk, ride a stationary bike or swim a few laps.

If you have already had a bout of swollen hemorrhoids, strenuous exercise can cause a flare-up.  However, you do not need to stop exercising just because you have hemorrhoids.  To get rid of the itching and burning that may make you uncomfortable during your workout or any other time, apply a hydrocortisone hemorrhoid agent two or three times a day for a maximum of three weeks, but do not use them any longer since they can break down delicate tissues.  You might want to rethink your routines and consider substitute exercises that will not put the kind of direct pressure on the lower rectum that can trigger swelling such as squats or exercises that involve prolonged sitting such as biking.  No matter how you work out, take frequent breaks and wear comfortable, non-irritating clothing.

Not a fun thing to have, many women get them when having a baby.
