There is not any treatment for stomach flu, so the best way to avoid developing it is by avoiding things such as water or food which may be contaminated. It is also helpful to avoid viral gastroenteritis by washing one’s hands frequently or using some type of hand sensitizer.

Stomach flu and influenza are different because influenza generally affects a  person’s respiratory system in areas of the lungs, nose and throat. Gastroenteritis generally infects a person’s intestines.

The general or most common symptoms of viral gastroenteritis are diarrhea which is watery, pain or cramps in the abdomen, vomiting or feeling nauseous sometimes both of these symptoms may occur, the person may develop a slight fever and headaches as well as muscles hurting. Symptoms can vary from being mild to severe and generally take from one to three days to occur when a person has been infected.

Two viruses that are associated with causing viral gastroenteritis are rotavirus and norovisuses. Children generally become infected with rotavirus by putting objects in their mouth which are contaminated with  rotavirus. The virus can also be on their fingers. It is also possible for people to have the rotavirus but not have any symptoms. There is a vaccine available that appears to help prevent symptoms which may be severe.

The other virus associated with stomach flu which is norovisuses affect adults as well as children can spread through families or entire communities. This virus spreads fairly fast when people are in restricted areas where they do not have the opportunity to move around very much. It can be transmitted by person contact as well as by contaminated water or food.

If an individual experiences any thing such as throwing up for longer than two days, being dehydrated, a fever more than 104 degrees, throwing up blood, or blood during a bowel movement, the individual should contact a doctor.

In cases where children or infants develop viral gastroenteritis. If they have temperature of 102 degrees, is either irritable or seems to lack energy, appears to be dehydrated or be in a lot of pain, a doctor should be consulted right away.

It is common for babies to spit up especially after being fed. However, throwing up is not common and a lot times when a baby vomits they may need to be taken to a doctor. If a baby has been vomiting for several hours, has not wet their diaper for six hours, has severe diarrhea, the soft spot on their head appears or feels like it has sunken, they cry but there are not any tears, or if the infant appears to be unresponsive, sleepy or drowsy more than usual. They should be taken to a doctor immediately.
